Layla Jones will forever be remembered for her electrifying buzzer-beater during last year’s Texas State High School Basketball Championship. The 16-year-old point guard from Dallas High nailed a three-pointer from beyond the arc, securing a one-point victory and bringing the state title home for the first time in 20 years.
“That shot was the culmination of everything I’ve worked for,” Layla recalls. “In that moment, all the drills, sweat, and sacrifices paid off.” Known for her lightning-fast reflexes, court awareness, and fearless drive, Layla is a game-changer. Averaging 18 points, 7 assists, and 4 steals per game, she’s one of the most dominant players in Texas high school basketball.
Layla’s journey to glory wasn’t without challenges. Growing up in an underserved community, resources for sports were limited. However, her determination caught the attention of a local youth program that provided her access to better training and facilities. “Basketball gave me a purpose,” she says. “It taught me discipline and how to dream big.”
Off the court, Layla is equally impressive. She maintains a 3.9 GPA, volunteers at a local shelter, and mentors younger athletes in her neighborhood. “I want to show kids that success is possible, no matter where you start,” she explains.
With her iconic play already etched into local history, Layla is focused on the future. She hopes to lead her team to another championship and has her sights set on playing college basketball while pursuing a degree in kinesiology.
