Athlete Profile: Maya Lopez

Maya Lopez is breaking barriers in El Paso’s basketball community, becoming one of the few Latina athletes to captain her varsity team. Known for her fierce competitiveness and incredible court vision, Maya has led her team to back-to-back district titles.
“For me, basketball is about representation and proving that anyone can succeed, no matter where they come from,” Maya shares. Growing up in a predominantly Hispanic community, Maya has become a role model for younger players, showing them that hard work and dedication can lead to success.
Off the court, Maya is equally passionate about giving back. She organizes free basketball clinics for children in underserved neighborhoods, focusing on skill development and building confidence. “I want to show kids that their dreams are valid,” she says.
Maya’s next goal is to secure a college basketball scholarship while continuing to inspire her community through her achievements.
